Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen: An Introduction

Using an examination of Patrice Chéreau’s revolutionary centenary staging at Bayreuth of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen as a starting point, director Thomas M. Salb has here produced a fascinating introduction to the composer’s vast four-part epic. The film features contributions from Chéreau, Pierre Boulez and others involved in the production and offers insights not just into the work itself and its genesis, but also into the founding of the Bayreuth Festival and the creation of the Festival Theatre, as well as the challenges that those performing and interpreting the work face. The result is a fascinating, though-provoking film that should appeal to seasons Wagnerians and beginners alike.
