The opening of the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg in 1960 helped reestablish the Salzburg Festival as a major player on the international music scene. And Salzburg-born conductor Herbert von Karajan was not only instrumental in this development but also conducted the first opera to be performed in the grand new theatre, Der Rosenkavalier, created by two of the Festival’s founding fathers, Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This documentary returns to that groundbreaking event, with interviews with artists including Franz Welser-Möst, Anna Prohaska and Günther Groissböck, while also accompanying Austrian polymath André Heller as he fulfils a long-cherished dream, directing a new production of Der Rosenkavalier in Berlin.
