Produced by the BBC and originally released to mark the 150th anniversary of Frédéric Chopin’s death in 1999, this film sees pianist András Schiff present a compelling case for his importance, as, in his words, “one of the greatest composers ever, on the highest level of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.” Schiff tells the story of Chopin’s remarkable life, interspersed with performances of his music, tracing his influences and the significance he played on the development, especially, of piano music – both as performer and composer. The result is not just a compelling examination of a composer’s life and career, but a powerful plea for his lasting seriousness as a great artist.
