The German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was a giant figure in the musical life of the second half of the 20th century, an artist who redefined standards for the performance, in particular, of German art song. After calling time on his 45-year career as a singer, he remained active as conductor, reciter, author of books and teacher. This film captures him over four days at the Musik- und Singschule Heidelberg, where he shares his unparalleled wisdom, knowledge and experience of the songs of composers such as Franz Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler and Johann Strauss with eight students, who in turn share their impressions of working with the great baritone.
