The young baritone Andrè Schuen has built an outstanding operatic career in recent years, not least in major Mozart roles. But the singer from Tyrol is also a captivating interpreter of the Romantic lied repertoire, as his releases on Deutsche Grammophon have shown. In this concert at the Ettersburg Palace in Weimar, Schuen and his permanent piano partner Daniel Heide perform two cycles by Gustav Mahler, with a small Schubert selection programmed in between. Mahler's depictions of loneliness, longing, and closeness to nature spoke at the time directly to an audience affected by the pandemic, themes also touched on by the Schubert songs – settings, like the second Mahler set performed here, of poems by Friedrich Rückert.
