Conductor Paavo Järvi describes the Austrian composer Franz Schmidt as "one of the really great voices of German Romantic music" and his recording of the composer's four symphonies with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony won a coveted Gramophone Award in 2021. Here he and the orchestra present the final symphony, the moving Fourth. First performed in 1934, it begins and ends with an expressive trumpet solo and offers poignant funeral music in the slow movement, featuring a beautiful cello solo. The programme is completed with the famous Intermezzo from Schmidt's 1914 opera Notre Dame, immediately recognizable for its distinctive high-lying string writing.
