Andris Nelsons and the Gewandhausorchester present a Richard Strauss programme, filmed in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, in which two of the composer's most famous tone poems feature alongside the Burleske, an early work for piano and orchestra whose exorbitant technical demands mean that only a small number of pianists chose to take it on. One such musician is Rudolf Buchbinder, an older statesman of the keyboard who brings plenty of youthful swagger to this early work. In the tone poems, meanwhile, conductor and orchestra bring their experience to bear in performances distinguished by luxurious orchestral sound and rare interpretative insight.
