One of Claudio Abbado's heartfelt wishes came true with the founding of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. After his departure from the position of chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the opportunity arose for him to realise symphonic music at the very highest level with artist friends. "Creativity, individuality, verve and musical experience at a unique level" was how a critic from the Berliner Zeitung described the ensemble made up of soloists, chamber and orchestral musicians. In this recording from the Festival's inaugural year (2003), Abbado conducts one of his favourite works: Gustav Mahler's monumental Second Symphony.
