Riccardo Chailly conducts Verdi's Macbeth, the composer's fiery first Shakespeare opera, to open the 2021-22 season at La Scala, Milan. American director Davide Livermore provides a striking modern production, mixing contemporary dress with memorable video projections and Italian baritone Luca Salsi takes on the title role, embodying the tragic General who takes the Scottish throne by force, his ambition fuelled by his ruthless wife, embodied here by Anna Netrebko. Bass Ildar Abdrazakov also stars, as Macbeth's betrayed friend Banquo, with Italian tenor Francesco Meli as Macduff.
