For its 2006 New Year's Eve Gala, the Berliner Philharmoniker, with conductor Simon Rattle, turned to music by Richard Strauss and the composer that Strauss idolized above any other, Mozart. The programme opens with the 24-year-old Strauss's breakthrough tone poem, Don Juan, a thrilling portrait of the same legendary figure immortalized in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Then, after Mitsuko Uchida performs Mozart's dramatic Piano Concerto in D minor, K. 466, Rattle conducts the famous Trio and finale from Strauss's most Mozartian opera, Der Rosenkavalier, with soloists including Magdalena Kožená and Camilla Nylund. With two encores thrown in for good measure, this was an evening to remember.
- Soloists:
- Magdalena Kožená (Mezzo-Soprano), Camilla Nylund (Soprano), Mitsuko Uchida (Piano), Dale Duesing (Baritone), Laura Aikin (Soprano)
