Even as a boy, Carl Nielsen saw the world differently, and he wasn't afraid to show it. Nielsen's exuberant First Symphony begins with a burst of youthful confidence (he even tells the orchestra to play it “proudly”). It's a bracing first step into Fabio Luisi's energetic, critically acclaimed exploration of Nielsen's musical universe, perfectly complemented by the immediacy, colour and sheer joy of Springtime on Funen, Nielsen's typically uninhibited salute to his boyhood in the Danish countryside, sung here by two of the finest choirs in a nation with a buoyant choral tradition. First, though, a vision of the south: the vast horizons and solar energy of one of Nielsen's best-loved masterpieces – the blazing Helios Overture.
