The Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík was an unassuming genius. But his roots – as part of a great musical family from Prague – as well as his long, transformative conductorship of the Munich-based Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra gave him an unforced but profound instinct for Central European repertoire. Here, he guest-conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in two symphonies steeped in the landscape and culture that he knew so well. He brings grandeur and unforced grace to Mozart’s "Prague" symphony and navigates the Alpine vistas of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony – nicknamed the “Romantic”, and arguably the composer's most popular major work – with a natural sense of accent, atmosphere and scale.
