Famed for its Beethoven and Bruckner under its long-term chief conductor Herbert von Karajan, the Berliner Philharmoniker were no less adept in more popular classics, as this New Year's Eve Concert from 1978 demonstrates. At home in the Berlin Philharmonie, conductor and orchestra offer impassioned Verdi with the Forza del destino overture and Gallic flair in music from Bizet's L'Arlésienne and before a trip to Hungary with Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and the Hungarian March from Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust. There's a return to Italy with the beautiful Intermezzo from Mascagni's L'amico Fritz before the programme is brought to a rousing conclusion with Franz von Suppè's Light Cavalry Overture.
