Semyon Bychkov is on the podium at the Rudolfinum in Prague for the first of the Czech Philharmonic’s Velvet Revolution concerts, staged on 17 November each year since 2020 to celebrate the events that brought about the end, after 41 years, of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia in 1989. For this concert, the programme features one of the seminal works of Czech orchestral music: Bedřich Smetana’s Má vlast (My Fatherland), composed between 1874 and 1879. Comprising six tone poems, the work paints a musical picture of Bohemia, including vivid portraits of the Vltava River and the Vyšehrad castle in Prague, as well as impressions “From Bohemia’s Woods and Fields”.
