Lang Lang once described Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto as "tremendously colourful – as if spring were coming around the corner at any moment." And the pianist's quick-witted musicianship and scintillating technique are ideal for Mendelssohn's music, as demonstrated in this concert, organised by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. The programme is completed with a festive overture, the "Scottish" Symphony, as well movements from other works, all conducted by Riccardo Chailly, then holder of the Gewandhauskapellmeister post held by Mendelssohn himself from 1835 to 1847.
