With its waterfalls, glaciers and climactic thunderstorm, late Romantic orchestral music doesn't get much more colourful than Richard Strauss's colossal Eine Alpensinfonie. But there's more to Strauss's vision than glorious scenery. Herbert von Karajan knew Strauss personally, and as a son of the Alps himself he was one of the first conductors to bring out the deeper, more spiritual side of Strauss's mighty hymn to nature, capturing all the work's philosophical complexity as well as its pictorial ambition. The Berliner Philharmoniker, meanwhile, brings its unparalleled virtuosity to one of the most technically demanding scores in the orchestral repertory.
