Marking the tenth anniversary of Herbert von Karajan's death, the Berliner Philharmoniker performs a memorial concert in the Salzburg Cathedral in 1999 under the direction of Claudio Abbado. In honour of their longtime principal conductor, the legendary Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is performed together with the Swedish Radio Choir and a first-class ensemble of soloists. For Abbado, Karajan was like a mentor, nurturing him as a young conductor and inviting him to the Salzburg Festival. A phenomenal performance of Mozart's Requiem pays tribute to Karajan in his hometown. Surrounded by myths, it is Mozart's last work before his death and perhaps the most personal piece he ever wrote.
