The director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle is credited by many with helping restore Mozart’s final opera, La clemenza di Tito, to its rightful place in the repertory – as a late masterpiece whose deep humanity shines through despite its conventional opera seria trappings. In adapting his Salzburg Festival staging of the work for television, Ponelle produced a lavish production not only making use of authentic Roman locations – the gardens and ruins of Hadrian’s Villa, the Terme of Caracalla and Rome’s Forum Romanum – but also showing a superb cast in the best possible light.
