The Russian-born pianist Stanislav Bunin astonished the world when he won the gold medal at the XI International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Aged only nineteen, he established a reputation as one of the most dazzling of a new generation of Chopin interpreters: steeped in the great Russian piano tradition, but possessed of a fresh and very personal vision. This 1987 recital from Munich’s Philharmonie im Gasteig captures him in at the peak of his youthful promise in a programme built (naturally) around Chopin, as well miniatures by Poulenc and Debussy – two composers for whom Bunin has a very special affinity.
