The forces of Bavarian State Opera are conducted by master Wagnerian Wolfgang Sawallisch, and the great Donald McIntyre delivers a towering performance in the title role. But with spectacular, gothic designs and the kinetic, thrillingly believable direction of Czech “New Wave” legend Václav Kašlík, it’s gripping on every level – faithful in every sense to Wagner’s conception of opera as a “complete artwork”.
