It’s often said that Wagner’s music dramas revealed a cinematic imagination before its time, and if that’s true, few films have come as close to realising his vision than this spectacular 1975 movie version of Der fliegende Holländer. The forces of Bavarian State Opera are conducted by master Wagnerian Wolfgang Sawallisch, and the great Donald McIntyre delivers a towering performance in the title role. But with spectacular, gothic designs and the kinetic, thrillingly believable direction of Czech “New Wave” legend Václav Kašlík, it’s gripping on every level – faithful in every sense to Wagner’s conception of opera as a “complete artwork”.
