Plácido Domingo stars as the tragic clown Canio in Franco Zeffirelli’s lavish Emmy Award-winning film of Leoncavallo’s emotional one-act opera (traditionally paired with Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana). The work cleverly fuses theatre and real life with heartbreaking results as Canio, having learnt of his wife’s infidelity, has to go on with the planned comedy show enacting just that scenario, until the boundary between theatre and reality final breaks down – with tragic consequences. With Teresa Stratas as Nedda and Juan Pons as the jealous Tonio, the drama has rarely been so clearly and powerfully.
