When the greatest achievement in German literature encountered the imagination of Robert Schumann the result was always going to be extraordinary, and Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust is a masterwork in a class of its own – part opera, part cantata, but glowing from first note to last with the poetic, passionate spirit of this most original of Romantic composers. This 1999 performance in the evocative surroundings of the 500-year-old Amandus Church in Bad Urach features an orchestra, chorus and cast who are immersed in the German Romantic tradition – including a rare appearance in this repertoire from the young Jonas Kaufmann.
