"Habe Dank!" ("Be Thanked!") cries the poet at the end of each stanza of Richard Strauss's song "Zueignung": the work of a young composer exulting in the twin joys of love and musical creation. Strauss wrote songs from the beginning of his artistic life to the very end, and this 1994 recital from from his adopted home of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, nestled in the Bavarian Alps, features five of that decade's supreme Strauss voices. These lovely vocal miniatures acquire magical new dimensions in the hands of a master orchestrator like Strauss, and conductor Roberto Abbado and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester bring out every nuance and colour.
