At the end of a long career, Richard Strauss looked back across a lifetime of songwriting and heard two larks soaring into the gathering dusk. Strauss's Four Last Songs are more than just the radiant sunset of a great creative life: they're probably the best-loved of all orchestral Lieder. But the ecstatic, visionary Hölderlin-Hymnen are every bit as ravishing, and in this concert – recorded live in 1994 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – these complementary song cycles are ideal vehicles for the voices of Pamela Coburn and Ruth Falcon, two American sopranos who ranked among the supreme Straussians of their generation.
