Salzburg Festival

In a city that has preserved its baroque architecture in almost perfect condition and therefore is a breathtaking backdrop in itself, the Salzburg Festival presents performances of opera, plays and concerts of the highest artistic standards over a period of five to six weeks each summer. The Salzburg Festival is often described as the greatest and most important festival in the world, and this reputation is confirmed by countless superlatives: witness the number of performances and of annual visitors, or the wide-ranging programme.

Conductors, stage-directors, orchestras, singers, actors and virtuoso instrumentalists of world renown can be seen and heard in July and August in the town on the river Salzach. Even the most eminent opera stars come together here to rehearse productions intensively for several weeks, thereby fulfilling the creed of the Salzburg Festival as it was originally envisioned by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the Festival’s founding fathers: "Dramatic play-acting in the strongest sense is our intention; routine, run-of-the-mill performances have no place here."

Hugo von Hofmannsthal as one of the founders

Hugo von Hofmannsthal was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Austrian literature and culture. Born into a wealthy Viennese family, he demonstrated literary talent from a young age, publishing his first poems and plays as a teenager.

Hofmannsthal's most significant contributions to the arts came through his collaboration with composer Richard Strauss. Together, they created several successful operas, including "Elektra", "Ariadne auf Naxos", and "Der Rosenkavalier". These operas are celebrated for their rich characterizations, complex librettos, and integration of music and drama.

The origins of the famous Festival

In addition to his work with Strauss, Hofmannsthal was a co-founder of the Salzburg Festival in 1920, along with director Max Reinhardt and composer Richard Strauss. The festival was conceived as a celebration of classical music, opera, and theatre, with an emphasis on the works of Mozart and other great composers. Hofmannsthal envisioned the festival to revive the cultural spirit of Austria and promote a sense of unity and artistic excellence.

The Salzburg Festival quickly became one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world, attracting leading musicians, conductors, and performers. It played a crucial role in the post-World War I cultural revival and continues to be a major international event, showcasing a wide range of classical and contemporary performances.

Hofmannsthal's legacy endures through his literary works and his role in establishing the Salzburg Festival, which remains a testament to his vision of bringing high art to a broad audience.

Experience the acoustics of a world-class theatre hall

STAGE+ offers you to enjoy authentic acoustics straight from the world-class theatre hall of Salzburg.

The ambitious plans for a grand festival theatre on the site of the former archiepiscopal stables were primarily envisioned by architect Clemens Holzmeister, with notable input from Herbert von Karajan, particularly regarding the design of the theatre hall. No expense or effort was spared to create a state-of-the-art opera stage within the three-century-old façade of the Hofmarstall and the Mönchsberg. The result, a theatre house that continues to meet the highest international standards even after 50 years, involved blasting 55,000 cubic meters of rock between autumn 1956 and early summer 1960 to carve out the necessary space.
