Andris Nelsons continues his survey of Mahler's symphonies with the Wiener Philharmoniker with the Fourth, streaming live from the Salzburg Festival. The last of the so-called "Wunderhorn" Symphonies and the composer's most intimate essay in the genre, the Fourth is characterized by an ostensibly lighter mood, with a first movement of pastoral character and a finals that started life as one of the "Wunderhorn" Songs: a setting of "Das himmlische Leben" featuring a soprano soloist (acclaimed German soprano Christiane Karg in this performance). To complete the programme, orchestra and conductor are joined by violinist Augustin Hadelich in Berg's Violin Concerto, subtitled "To the memory of an angel" – an appropriate and moving coupling.
