The great Grigory Sokolov’s 2023 touring programme is captured here in performances filmed at two concerts in Spain: at the Kursaal Auditiorium in Donostia, San Sebastián and at the Palacio de Festivales in Santandar. The programme takes the pianist into rarely heard repertoire by English Baroque master Henry Purcell – including three of his keyboard suites and the Chaconne in G Minor – which shines afresh through the unparalleled clarity of his playing. For the second half he turns to more familiar repertoire with Mozart’s large-scale, lyrical Sonata K. 333 and the remarkable Adagio in B minor. Then, as is now tradition, come the encores, here encompassing music by Rameau, Chopin and Bach.
