Many connoisseurs consider Grigory Sokolov the most important pianist of our time. Yet fans had to wait over a decade for him to approve the filming of another recital. In this rare recording from the Berlin Philharmonie in 2013, Sokolov performs works by Schubert – pieces captivating in their delicacy and richness of melody – along with Beethoven's mighty "Hammerklavier" Sonata, whose technical and musical challenges are so enormous that almost 20 years passed before Franz Liszt dared to first perform the piece in public. Sokolov's intensity and understated stage presence are felt all the way through to the encores: works from the French Baroque and Brahms that keep the the audience rapt until the very last note.
