That’s one of the images that is said to have fired Sibelius’s imagination as he composed his Fourth Symphony: a work that stares fearlessly into the abyss to find a hard-won, intensely personal kind of hope. For Jukka-Pekka Saraste it’s a masterpiece with "cosmic dimensions", and a natural climax to his Helsinki Sibelius cycle. Two equally powerful visions complete the concert: an outpouring of lyrical passion from the young Bartók, played by the superb Latvian violinist Kristine Balanas, and Sebastian Fagerlund’s reimagining of the orchestra as a cloudscape of ever-shifting sounds
