Marek Janowski conducts Beethoven's Missa Solemnis
Spring Festival in Tokyo
120 Min
In one of the most eagerly anticipated concerts of the 2025 Spring Festival in Tokyo, veteran conductor Marek Janowski conducts NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Opera Singers and a quartet of international soloists in one of the towering masterpieces of the choral repertoire, Beethoven's mighty Missa Solemnis. "From the heart – may it return to the heart!" wrote Beethoven in the copy he presented to Archduke Rudolf of Austria, the mass's dedicatee, and few of the composer's works are as moving, as profound – or seem to ask such fundamental questions about faith and humanity. And this performance, filmed in the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and with one of today's most respected conductors at the helm, promises to go straight to the heart, too.
