From the 1950s until his early death in 1981, the conductor, organist and harpsichordist Karl Richter was one of the most important figures on the international Baroque music scene, celebrated above all for his Bach and Handel performances. His reputation suffered somewhat with the arrival of a new generation of historical performance practice specialists in the 1980s and later, but, as these performances of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with his excellent Munich Bach Orchestra demonstrate, his music-making was characterized by emotionality and profundity, and revelling in a lively sense of celebration, instrumental virtuosity and a vital feeling for the composer's dancing rhythms.
