With a cast of just two and a running time of less than an hour, Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle is one of the most concentrated and powerful operas in the repertoire. This classic film version from 1981 was produced in and around Budapest, both in the studio and in an abandoned quarry, whose many forbidding spaces create just the right atmosphere to match Bartók's haunting sound world. Two of the great Hungarian singers of the day, Kolos Kováts and Sylvia Sass, star as Bluebeard and his new wife, Judith, with Georg Solti and the London Philharmonic Orchestra providing a powerful orchestral foundation.
