Wiener Philharmoniker

One of the last filmed performances by Georg Solti, this 1995 concert captures the conductor directing the Wiener Philharmoniker in music from his native Hungary alongside Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. Born in Budapest in 1912, Solti went on to study with several great figures of early 20th-century Hungarian music, including the great composer and reformer Zoltán Kodály – and here he presents one of Kodály's most popular works, the Háry János Suite of 1927. Even in his final years, Solti's conducting is as clear-sighted and disciplined as ever, not only highlighting the wit and colour of Kodály's music, but also instilling the Beethoven with a rare rhythmic drive and excitement. These are truly performances to treasure.
