When she was invited to direct Mozart's Così fan Tutte, film director and writer Doris Dörrie confessed to being an "opera ignoramus". Nevertheless, the managed to bring a fresh approach to Mozart's late – and at one time much derided – comic masterpiece, her colourful production relocating the opera's action to the hippie era without undermining the seriousness of its ultimate message. "It is a tribute to Dörrie's ingenuity," said the International Herald Tribune, "that she plumbs the emotions while hoisting the comedy to new heights." Musically, too, the show was in the safest of hands, with Daniel Barenboim conducting a superb ensemble cast.
