Carlos Kleiber's concert repertoire was well known for being extremely select, but he had a golden touch for the small number of works that he chose to perform. Brahms's Second Symphony was one of those works, and his interpretations of it acquired legendary status. It doesn't feature among the small number of studio recordings he approved for release, but was preserved in live recordings such as this one, filmed in 1991, with the Vienna Philharmonic: a performance striking for the way that it uncovers the darker heart of this ostensibly sunny work. No less revelatory was his way with Mozart, whose brilliant "Linz" Symphony completes this programme – an unforgettable concert from an incomparable artist.
