Jan Lisiecki and a superb line-up of Japanese string players present an evening featuring two of Brahms's most beautiful chamber works. The Canadian pianist takes centre stage in the expansive Second Piano Quartet, completed in 1861 and premiered the following year with Brahms himself at the piano – a meltingly lyrical work in which the composer mixes chamber music intimacy with symphonic scale. Composed some three decades later, the String Quintet No.2 was originally conceived to be Brahms's final work. It reflects the economy and mastery of the composer's late style, with its beautiful Adagio, in particular, shot through with a moving sense of melancholy.
