The 2022 Europakonzert saw the Berliner Philharmoniker travel to the Liepāja on the west coast of Latvia. And in this, the central performance from the concert, star Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča joins the orchestra and its chief conductor Kirill Petrenko for Berio's remarkable Folk Songs. Originally composed with a chamber accompaniment in 1964 and then rearranged for large orchestra in 1973, the work brings together arrangements of folk songs from five different countries to striking effect – and constitutes a showcase of vocal technique and temperament.
