For many decades, Korngold's 1920 hit opera Die tote Stadt languished in obscurity, but with this superb, multi-award-winning 2019 production by Simon Stone in Munich, it can be said to have reclaimed its place at the heart of the 21st-century operatic repertoire. Jonas Kaufmann and Marlis Petersen give searing, career-best performances as the bereaved Paul and Marie/Marietta, while Stone's contemporary settings transform Korngold's sumptuous psychodrama into a timeless, perceptive and intensely moving study of love and loss. With Kirill Petrenko conducting, this might also be the most gorgeous-sounding Tote Stadt to have been recorded in any medium.
