In a performance taken from a 2021 concert, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra perform the vibrant Sinfonietta No. 1 by Mieczysław Weinberg – a composer whose recent renaissance has in no small part being helped by the compelling advocacy of the Lithuanian conductor. The Sinfonietta was composed during Weinberg's prolific first years in Moscow and dates from 1948, the year that his works were banned by the Soviets, marking the start of his struggle to gain any sort of lasting recognition for his works. With its mixture of energy and introspection, it's a hugely appealing work that looks forward to much of the composer's later music.
