Lang Lang, virtuoso pianist and global inspiration for piano students everywhere, performs at the Berliner Philharmoniker Gala Concert under the direction of Simon Rattle. On the programme are two Russian composers: Sergei Rachmaninoff and Pjotr Iljitsch Tchaikovsky. After the unsuccessful premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninoff found himself in a deep creative crisis, for which he needed medical treatment. Only then was he able to begin work on his Second Piano Concerto that was celebrated as a success worldwide. In this performance, Lang Lang daringly masters the technically challenging solo part before the orchestra takes the audience into a dream world with a performance of Tchaikovsky's world-famous ballet The Nutcracker.
