Europakonzert 2004 from Athens – with Simon Rattle & Daniel Barenboim
Berliner Philharmoniker
The Berliner Philharmoniker has played its annual Europakonzert in many great venues and with many celebrated artists. But for sheer spectacle and historic resonance, few occasions have rivalled 2004's open-air concert from the Herodes Atticus Theatre in Athens – a 1,850-year-old amphitheatre below the Acropolis. For the first time in their careers, two towering artistic personalities come together as partners: Simon Rattle conducts, and Daniel Barenboim is the soloist in Brahms's epic First Piano Concerto, performed beneath the Aegean skies in front of an audience of 5,000. The programme ends (fittingly, for this conductor's first ever Europakonzert) with a real Rattle speciality: Schoenberg's orchestration of Brahms's First Piano Quartet.
