When Tchaikovsky came to write his Symphony No. 5, he was at the peak of his success and was undoubtedly Russia’s most famous composer. The 1888 premiere was only a moderate success, but the symphony’s quality – completed a decade after the fourth – was immediately recognized, and it now counts as one of the most beloved of all works in the symphonic repertoire. This performance by Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker, filmed in the Philharmonie in 1973, captures the conductor at his peak, conveying not only the work’s drama and passion, but also a strong sense of the formal mastery that binds the piece together.
