Bruckner dedicated his Ninth Symphony "to the dear God", and this tremendous unfinished masterpiece is simultaneously the greatest tragedy and the sublimest achievement of his entire career. For a Bruckner interpreter as devoted as Herbert von Karajan, it was a work that revealed new depths and heights with each performance, and Gramophone magazine described his interpretation as "utterly magnificent" – charged with "awesome power and mystery" and crowned by the "transfiguring fire" of the Berlin Philharmonic's brass section. A towering performance from one of the 20th century's great conductor-orchestra pairings.
