Karajan conducts Verdi: Don Carlo

Sixteenth-century Spain: a place of intrigue where kings and princes are merely pawns in a game played by higher, darker forces. Verdi's Don Carlo is arguably his single greatest opera, and in this magnificent 1986 performance from the Salzburg Festival it receives the full Karajan treatment, directed as well as conducted by Herbert von Karajan at the height of his insight and authority. Stunning period designs complement one of the finest casts ever assembled for Don Carlo, with José Carreras at his passionate best in the title role, Ferruccio Furlanetto as Phillip II and Agnes Baltsa as Princess Eboli.
