Anton Bruckner's unfinished Ninth Symphony represented for him both a contract and a conversation with God. Herbert von Karajan's great mentor Bernhard Paumgartner actually attended Bruckner's funeral, and Karajan's relationship with this mightiest of Austrian romantic symphonies was intensely personal: he performed it at least 38 times over his long career, finding new insights and emotional truths on each occasion. This one dates from 1978, and finds Karajan conducting his beloved Wiener Philharmoniker, an orchestra with a Bruckner tradition dating back to the composer’s lifetime, and a sound – majestic, and lit from within – that's perfectly suited to Bruckner's soaring vision.
