Whenever Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker turned to French music, the results were characterized by an astonishing and unprecedented sonic beauty and orchestral playing of a standard that, at the time, was rarely heard in the repertoire. And so it is here with this programme filmed in the in the Philharmonie in 1978, featuring two of Debussy’s best-loved orchestral works – the haunting atmospheric La Mer and the ground-breaking Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune – alongside the Second Suite from Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé, an orchestral showpiece that begins with a stunning sunrise and concludes in swirling "danse genérale".
