Herbert von Karajan is at the helm of the Berliner Philharmoniker for this programme of favourite overtures leading us into the Romantic era. We begin with Beethoven and the rousing overtures to the dramas Coriolan and Egmont before moving to Rossini’s thrilling Guillaume Tell Overture. With its solemn opening brass chorale contrasted with swirling passions of the “Venusberg Music”, Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture has always been a concert favourite, just as Weber’s Freischütz Overture has been, with its memorable melodies and atmospheric orchestration. As one would expect, Karajan and his orchestra lavish characteristic passion, vision and virtuosity on all five works.
