Holding up to 20,000 spectators, the Waldbühne in Berlin is the world’s largest concert hall. In 2004, the Berliner Philharmoniker, along with Simon Rattle and the star pianist Lang Lang, come together to perform works of Tchaikovsky. This dream team of the classical music scene, its reputation established after numerous joint concerts over the years, conjures images and dream-like fantasies with the Russian repertoire. Having made his international breakthrough with the same piece, Lang Lang masterfully performs Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, a work that has been harshly criticised for its difficulty and extremely virtuosic opening movement. Encores by Shostakovich, as well as the icon Berliner Luft, complete the programme.
