2006 marked the 150th anniversary of Robert Schumann's death and so a tribute from the city of Leipzig could not be amiss. The composer spent his years of study and early marriage there between 1828 and 1844. The concert by the Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by the Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus, Riccardo Chailly, features Martha Argerich, one of Schumann's most distinguished and passionate interpreters of the immortal piano concerto. Orchestral versions of piano works, penned by Schumann-admirers Tchaikovsky and Ravel, demonstrate the Romantic German's influence throughout Europe. The evening concludes with the Fourth Symphony, bringing poetry and originality in unison.
