Waldbühne 2006: 1,001 Nights – with Neeme Järvi & Janine Jansen
Berliner Philharmoniker
Thousand and One Nights was the theme of the Berliner Philharmoniker's 2006 Waldbühne concert – a night of musical storytelling beneath the stars in Berlin's spectacular amphitheatre. Naturally, that meant excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade, as well as a selection of fairy-tale delights both familiar (Grieg's Peer Gynt) and less well-known (Nielsen's Aladdin) – conducted with characteristic verve and charm by a real favourite among the BPO's roster of guest-conductors, maestro Neeme Järvi, who is joined by Dutch violinist Janine Jansen in two particularly delicious lollipops: the Méditation from Massenet's Thaïs and Saint-Saëns' glittering Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. It's fair to say that they strike sparks off each other.
